Environment Concept Art 15
This is a follow-up to a post made late last October about one of the environments in the comic. I finally got around to putting more time into developing the style for the architecture, and this is where we’re at right now.
This image shows one of the hallways in the complex. It has the same basic concept of what we originally had in mind: stone walls, neutral colors except for the plants, mix of greenhouse with Gothic architecture. This image shows the architectural style as being more Romanesque with modern elements, such as glass ceilings and indirect lighting.
It’s cool looking and it works. There’s nothing wrong with going Romanesque. However, all of us originally imagined it as being more Gothic and, quite frankly, more spooky. The Romanesque look does communicate a stronger sense of emptiness, which totally works in the context of the environment, and the Gothic style would seem to be more cliché in this context too. After all, it was the first idea we came up with. Either way, when I return to designing this environment again I’ll try something more Gothic to see if that works better. Who knows, I’ll probably be able to put a new spin on it and it’ll work a lot better.

Very nice. To be honest, when I first saw this, I felt like it captured a mood in a really great way, to an extent I hadn’t seen before here (which says a lot because everything I’ve seen here does have a lot of depth to it.) It has a less “painted” feel than some of the other works, and the lighting really conveys the depth well. If you guys can get that in the whole comic, this is going to be awesome!
I agree that the gothic approach may be a bit cliche. This has a fresh feel to it that is very nice.
Keep it up. Really inspiring stuff!
