Color Keys 2: Island
One of the time consuming parts of creating art is figuring out exactly what colors to use. That’s one of the reasons why color keys are important to us. Not only does it help us create a color script for the comic, but once we get into production all we have to do is eye-drop our color keys and just paint away. We can skip the usual color study phase of our process once we get into production because we’ve already done it for all the art in that scene once before.
Sometimes however, we’ll have a scene that requires more than one color scheme to be made.
In Chapter 9 of Hackberry Hollow two characters are talking as the sun sets [text obscured so it can not be read in accordance with our No Spoiler Policy] and some stuff happens. They stay at the same spot as the sun sets and we transition from one color scheme to another. So I had to draw the same painting twice to figure out the different color schemes. I did the night time shot first, and then painted over it for the sunset shot which was more complex. The lighting was lighter and fuller so I had to paint in more detail.

hm….maybe not. 🙂 I remember doing this type of thing for my Bachelors fine art final show. I remember that I loved the sunset version, but I forgot to change the angle of a major shadow from the daytime painting! Whoops! Awesome work bro. 😀

Hi I really like the work of the island and I would like to ask you if it’s possible to see the psd files of the two different works and maybe have a daylight version of the same picture thanks 🙂
