Environmental Concept Art 5

Well, I don’t know about you guys but I figure I’ve let Glen and Adam have all the fun for long enough.  So, here it is! What we have here is a nice bit of concept work of what we think that a limestone cave that is located near Preston’s cabin will look like.

We wanted it to be in a nice secluded spot that would be hard to spot from land, or even from the ocean. There are several of these types of caves located throughout this area. This particular one will play a significant role later on in the comic.

Hey cool – an new artist! So, exactly what does each artist specialize on in your group?
Great background! I really like how you rendered the cliff face. Did you take into account the angle of a specific panel or did you just want to record what the set looks like before you deign the panels?

PS: Adam, if you want to see some pictures from my trip to Europe, I’ll be posting them on my blog over the next week or two. Do you still have the address from Digital Illustration class? I think a few might come in handy for reference.

Right now we are still in conceptual stage of the comic, and are trying to nail the set designs that will be used in the comic itself. We haven’t designed the scene composition for each panel yet, but don’t be surprised if you see scene composition’s in the panels of our comic that are the same as our concept art, because we do try to tell the story through our concept art and some compositions will probably be too good to throw away.
As for areas of specialization, We each have a set of skills that helps us excel as a team, but to break it down I would say that Adam does most of the 3d work, and Glen and I do most of the painting.

Yeah, Shane has been with us from the beginning. In the past I’ve been posting more than he has but you’ll be seeing a lot more concept art coming out of him.

We really don’t have any specialists between Shane and myself right now. That will change when we start production of the comic book pages. Traditionally you have a penciler, inker, and a colorist creating each page, but because we are planning on having a painted style in Hackberry Hollow and neither of us wants to be stuck as just the penciler or painter for the next few years, we’ll have to find some way to divide the load between us.

We know what Adam will be doing for sure (3D assets to make our lives as penciler/painters a lot easier), but from the looks of it there’s a good chance Adam will be done with the 3D art assets long before Shane and I are ready to start painting the comic book pages. So in the end there will be 3 painters, or at least 3 people that want to paint. During this concept art phase we’ll have a good idea about what each of us is good at and what we’re interested in working on. So from that we’ll divide the tasks, switch tasks around occasionally so we don’t burn out—not to mention that all of us like to do everything—and make the final product consistent no matter who does what.

Oh, and a little tidbit of history: Shane is the guy that actually got me into illustration.
